Shirley is a dynamic legal professional with a distinctive combination of skills in accounting, finance, banking compliance, and legal practice. She completed her pupillage with Mr Selwyn Yu S.C., Mr Victor Luk, Mr Victor Gidwani, and Mr Tony Ko. With over a decade of experience across accounting, finance and banking industries, Shirley brings a strategic and holistic approach to her legal career.
Shirley’s professional journey began at KPMG, one of the 'big four' global accountancy firms, where she worked as an external auditor. Her role involved auditing listed companies and reviewing public announcements. This work experience provided Shirley with a solid foundation in financial regulations and corporate governance. Shirley also gained experience in pre-IPO and M&A due diligence. She attained a Certified Public Accountant Qualification in 2010.
Following her tenure at KPMG, Shirley joined HSBC, where she initially worked in OTC Derivatives Trading in the Global Banking and Markets Division. Her transition to the Regulatory Compliance Department allowed her to specialise in Market Misconduct Surveillance. These experiences gave Shirley concrete financial product knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of regulatory compliance issues. Shirley also gained experience in dealing with financial regulators.
Shirley’s multifaceted experience across sectors of accounting, financial regulations and banking compliance allows her to navigate complex legal issues with confidence and expertise: -
- Advising Practising Accountant. Shirley advises practising accountants regarding rules and requirements of “HKSA 240 The Auditor’s Responsibilities Relating to Fraud in an Audit of Financial Statements” and regulatory investigations. She has represented professional accountants in ICAC and SFC investigations and provided legal advice in Accounting and Financial Reporting Council investigations.
- Advising SFC Licensed Corporations. Shirley had been engaged by licensed corporations to provide strategic advice in handling SFC investigation inquiries. Shirley also represented licensed corporations in court applications under sections 56 and 62 of the Trust Ordinance (Cap. 29) upon cessation of business.
- Advising Licensed Insurance Brokers. Shirley has also worked with licensed insurance brokerage firms, providing legal advice during investigations and representing the firms in interviews conducted by ICAC and the Insurance Authority.
- Financial Misselling Litigation. Shirley’s knowledge of financial products enables her to advise private banking clients on regulatory complaints and litigations against banks based in China and Switzerland, particularly concerning complex products of Equity-Linked Notes, Accumulators/Decumulators and Dual Currency Investments (FX Derivatives).
- Internal Investigation. Shirley has been engaged by senior management of international banks to provide tactical advice during internal investigations.
- Alternative Dispute Resolutions. Shirley has also participated in ICC Arbitration (as counsel) and mediation, demonstrating her diverse ability in dispute resolution.
- Criminal Litigation. Shirley (led by Mr Selwyn Yu S.C.) had been involved in criminal trials, defending clients against charges related to the Inland Revenue Ordinance (Cap 112), false instruments, and the Building Ordinance (Cap 123).
Shirley is developing a broad civil and criminal practice and accepts instructions in all work areas. Shirley is fluent in Mandarin and capable of providing written legal opinions in traditional and simplified Chinese.
Lam Choi Yuk v. Lam Hing Wan DCCJ 4265/2021 [2024] HKDC 1279
As the sole advocate at trial, Shirley acted for the Defendant in resisting the enforcement of an agreement to sell her business based on undue influence. After a fund tracing exercise illustrated to the Court, the Defendant succeeded in her counterclaim of income wrongfully obtained by the Plaintiff after the business transfer date.

Shirley (led by Mr Kay Chan) appeared for the Defendant in a short-selling case, which marked a significant milestone for SFO s.300.

Shirley acted for the Defendant and filed an application to strike out the 1st Plaintiff’s claim on nuisance. The 1st Plaintiff sought to discontinue her claim before an interlocutory hearing.

Shirley, acting for the Plaintiff, to set aside the 2nd and 3rd Will of the Deceased for reason of lacking testamentary capacity.
Outstanding Management Consultation Ltd v. Gold Topmont Ltd and Another HCA 321/2022
Shirley (led by Mr Lee Yee Hung) successfully secured a Charging Order against the development at Ho Man Tin (Grand Homm) held by the 1st Defendant, who had failed to satisfy a judgment debt of over HK$811 million.
